A Fistful Of Food Formulas

Here are some recipes that have stayed in my regular rotation, either because they are easy and/or give a good yield of leftovers and/or are straight-up yum y'all.

1. The Quick Side-Dish

Spaghetti (noodles) with oil and garlic and chili pepper flakes. No need to cook anything but the noodles! Don’t forget to salt the pasta water.

2. The Pork Tenderloins Were On Sale

It’s a bit complex for my liking but after making it a few times you can skip some of the steps in this one and get most of the taste. Use a meat thermometer so you don’t overcook it, because it won’t look done when it is.

3. The Breakfast-For-The-Week

It’s got granola, apples and cinnamon. It’s like an apple crumble dessert without all the sugar. I’ll cut the sugar from the recipe down even more because there’s plenty in the apples for me. You need some of the honey to clump the topping though.

I’ll make a dish of this on a Sunday and eat it every morning of that week with some plain yogurt on top. Because flavoured yogurt is ice cream.

4. The Tastes-Way-Better-Than-You’d-Expect

Lentils are kinda dull and there’s not much else in this one besides the soup base so it really makes you wonder. Keep a jar of red lentils around and this is an easy and good pot of soup. Really. Every time I make it I think, “this won’t be that good.” And then it is. And now I’ve ruined it for you by amping up your expectations. Sorry.

5. The Picky Eater

This is a solid basic mac and cheese recipe you can build on. Things I’ve done to it that have worked well: added some sausages, used crushed pretzels instead of bread crumbs, and used cauliflower in place of some noodles. Great as-is though. Don’t forget to salt the pasta water.

6. The Forgot-The-Nuts

Also known as: Damn Man, You Eat A Lot Of Pasta. I love noodles but you don’t always want a heavy cheese sauce. Instead, this is a good summer-fresh pasta salad. I rarely add the nuts but it’s still good without the nuts. When I do pay attention to the nuts I usually use walnuts because they look like tiny brains.

7. The Cookie Training Wheels

And finally, something sweet. These are great for learning to make soft, moist perfectly round cookies. I like my women like I like my cookies, easy and filled with ginger brown and tasty sweet and wholesome.
