I’ve been delaying posting about Mexico because I really didn’t know what to say. We went to a resort, we drank, we ate, we got sick. Pretty much what you would expect and/or what you have experienced. But one of my favourite parts of the trip was taking photos. Both because I’m still enjoying practising taking photos and because everything there is so damn beautiful. Including the girls I went with. So here are some photos along with some stories.
1. Usted Está Aqui
I sure was! This is the map on the jogging track. A great place to find some lizards, if you’re into that sort of thing. I briefly considered running on it before thinking it was 18 billion degrees out and exerting myself would probably lead to a serious case of falling over.
2. Kristen

Kristen was the bride. Her (and her now-husband Grant’s) wedding were the reason a pile of us piled into a plane and headed to Mexico. I haven’t known Kristen terribly long, but as the saying goes, never turn down a trip to a Mexican resort to see a new friend get married. This shot was taken as she was getting ready. I was trying to distract her from the hugeness of what lay ahead by sticking several cameras in her face.
3. Beach chairs
You have to get up pretty early in the morning to find a row of empty beach chairs to photograph. But mornings and evenings were the best times to be out. In the middle of the day you are under constant attack by the sun and his army of super-hot rays. So at those times, while the ladies embraced the rays, I would often hide away in the hammock or on a bench in the shade. The nights (not pictured) were the best though. I love the smell of a warm, humid night in the morning.
4. Crystal jumps in
Plug your nose, of course! I had a major first on this trip: the first time I was ever submerged in water. It happened at Xplor, a theme park of underground caves and above-the-tree ziplines. The zipline course had 14 lines and to get between two of them, they had a water slide. I had never been down a water slide before and I didn’t think that it would end with me underwater. (Also my first time down a water slide, clearly) I also didn’t think the opposite. I didn’t think anything. Needless to say, I didn’t plug my nose and when I hit the water, the flip flops in my hand went flying and I had a brief underwater freak out and water went places it shouldn’t've.
(Note: I didn’t get any pictures of that, but I’m sure you would rather see a picture of a resort worker ogling Crystal anyway.)
5. Alyssa naps
I shared a room with Alyssa, which meant she saw me shirtless far more than anyone should in a given week. She’s a good roomie (when she can find the room) though I did feel like part of an old married couple. This picture is her pretending to nap on one of those rare afternoons when the hammock was not occupied by me.
6. Kelly
Kelly was one of the bridesmaids. She, a doctor-to-be, has such a tight schedule she could only make the trip down for a few days. I love this photograph of her. I think she looks better in candid photos than when she knows you’re there. I also got to spent an evening chatting about really gross medical stuff with her. And it was our Mojito-turned-gin-and-tonic-when-they-ran-out-of-mint night that was the only night I was described to be, as Crystal put it, “on wheels.”

[...] Haroon that weekend, in what was a very pleasant happenstance, was Kristen and Grant. They were the folks who got married in Mexico. I’ve seldom got to spend any real time with them, so I’m glad our weekends overlapped. [...]
